There was a woman that was in a secret competition with her coworkers to get to work first. She made it her goal to get to the office before everyone else, no matter what. She didn’t get paid extra for being first. There wasn’t an award for being first. The workload wasn’t even heavy enough to require extra hours. Driven by the need to win this secret competition, she made sure she was first at the office everyday by any means. She didn’t prepare to be first the night before though. So, every morning she found herself rushing out of the door only to get to work and realize that she missed doing a few important steps before leaving the house. Some days she would bypass a few “basic hygiene” steps and come in looking a little rough…just to be able to say that she was the first in the office that morning.
Sad. It meant nothing… other than she was first.
Oftentimes, we find ourselves competing with an invisible time clock or people to get the insignificant title of being first. We miss the important steps of the process just to say we did it first. Being properly prepared and equipped will always trump being first. How many times have you missed the important steps of a process just to get it done first only to later realize that you could’ve done a better job? Sometimes there may be a prize for being first but the continual blessings fall on the prepared. In this social media age, it’s so easy to find ourselves competing with illusions so we rush through life trying to win titles that have no value. A good thing has more value than the first thing. First doesn’t mean better. It just means first. Strive to be a good thing.
There will be other people doing the thing you feel called to do but those critical steps that you took the time to do matter more than being first. Don’t rush through life trying to be first. Take ALL the important steps that will make you the best. Don’t be like ole girl…first and funky… Smile.. You’ve got this.
